How does your Garden Grow?

"Build houses and settle down; plant gardens and eat what they produce."Jeremiah 29:5

Here is a look at a few of our square foot boxes and some of the things we have growing in our garden right now. We use square foot gardening method to increase the yield in the limited space. We switched to this model after learning about the urban homestead that grew a great deal more food then we were in a similar amount of space. We love the low maintenance of Square foot gardening and the organic food we grow is so tasty!

Sweet Yellow Onions...this is not enough onions for us. Next year I will plant two boxes of onions and that should last us for about a year.

The Herb box (marjoram, thyme, sage, oregano, mint, fennel parsley, cilantro, and I'm sure I'm forgetting something)

The Cabbage Family box: cabbage, kohlrabi ...the chickens really like this box and the couple of times they made it into the garden they ate this box to the ground. They also ate my mustard to the ground. We may have Chicken & Dumplings if this continues! We are getting ready to empty this box and move it next to herb box and pack it full of more basil and garlic.

Here is the lettuce, carrots and Swiss chard ( sometimes radishes) in box. This is sort of a salad box that I maintain throughout the year. I love going out to the garden to cut our nearly daily dinner salad.

Potatoes are a new crop for us they are in deep boxes and they seem to be doing well. I will have to cover these again today and we will plant some more. We need 3 boxes for enough potatoes for the year and right now we have 1 1/2 boxes and we will be filling our last box this weekend and planting the last of our potatoes. We planted yellow and red potatoes in the boxes.
The last thing that I wanted to show you is the green bean box. As I am interested in one day running a CSA & in feed my family well. I am working on succession gardening in this box. Which means I plant a couple of plants each week over the entire planting season. This should extend my harvest for weeks. This box is half planted and I will plant two more rows today and the rest will be planted in a week or so.

In our house we have started our cream peas (similar to black eye peas), watermelon, cantaloupe and pumpkins. You may want to try starting some plants too and get a jump start on the next gardening season.
I hope you are enjoyed a mini tour of part of garden and I'd love to hear about your garden. Or answer any questions, though I am not an expert I'm a Mama.

Kyle, your garden looks wonderful! I'm so glad to see your space being used so well and producing such beautiful fruit!

Just looking at the pictures is inspiring. We've got red and gold potatoes, onions, black beans, lima beans, squash, and strawberries in the ground right now, with some other plants started indoors. I definitely want to try the succession planting for a more continuous crop!

We've got some new leaves coming on our blackberries and fig tree, and our June Gold Peach tree has blossoms all over it! Do you know much about peaches? Right now, we're just letting it grow :)

Of course, the mint, oregano, rosemary, and chives are thriving in this weather, and I hope to get a good production of basil and cilantro.

Thanks for sharing!
Rachel

So funny you mentioned the exact verse I read recently that stuck with me. God must be saying something....

On the garden itself - this looks really great! Rabbits and birds ate our entire garden last year. I really want to try this sometime though. Looks like you're having success along your journey. Blessings!
