Home Sweet Home School

My newest pupil, Tiny the baby Rooster. I think this might qualify as a Charlotte Mason education?(Oh and yes, Parker is talking to the chicken.)

Sorry for the accidental blog break but as you can see things have been a little crazy around here! I'll check back soon to give everyone a real update!

Where in the World Have the McVays Been - Waco

http://widget-15.slide.com/widgets/slideticker.swf" height="320" width="426" style="width:426px;height:320px">http://widget-15.slide.com/widgets/slideticker.swf" />

In April we went to Waco after picking Wayne up at the Austin Airport (makes complete sense right? lols). We stopped and ate at Kitoks a local burger dive recommended by the The Texas Burger Guy. We are a hamburger loving family and I thought what a great chance to try a new burger. It was very good and we loved the oriental fries. Kitok's is a combination Burger Joint Asian Restaurant you could not do a skit of the joint without being labeled a too far fetched or a racist but the place exists and they make a good burger!

Then we went to our destination which was Homestead Heritage and it was wonderful. Of course we are all about homesteading so this place was right up our alley.

What is Homestead Heritage: Our Visitors Center stands just inside the front gate at Brazos de Dios, our 510-acre homesteading community. At the log cabin Visitors Center you’ll find information about our seasonal activities and special events as well as the various craft courses and teaching seminars we offer throughout the year.
We saw:

  • The Potter
  • Blacksmith
  • Herb gardener
  • Windmill (which transports water through out the farm)
  • Garden
  • Animal enclosures
  • Gristmill (where you grind flour, corn meal etc...)

My favorite part was the herb garden. Where we were able to talk to one of the gardeners. She even gave me some yarrow to take home and plant in my herb garden. I was so excited I took it home and planted it immediately by the next morning some critter ate my yarrow and I cannot find it anywhere locally.

Parker loved the potter shed. In fact, I've already purchased an appropriate Christmas Gift for her to practice her new found love of pottery. Plus what mom could pass up teaching their child how God is the potter and we are the clay while they are elbow deep in the stuff.

Peyton liked the stairs. She is fascinated with stairs and they had some long beautiful paths of steps.

Pearson just loves anything where she can get some food!

Wayne was fascinated by how they use the windmill, cistern and water tower to catch and move rain water around the facility. liked the

It was a very fun and educational family field trip! They even offer classes and Wayne and I are considering going there this year for our Anniversary to take classes in Bee Keeping (Wayne) & Gardening (Kyle).

Fun & Frugal decorating....

This is my attempt to incorporate some of the ideas I got from the blog Like the Merchant Ships. On her blog she talks about making th ordinary beautiful and rearrange (or repurposing) what you already have. So here we go....

This was my coffee station. It was nice and neat but didn't say ROOSTER HILL! But a few months back I purchased some rooster place mats (4) clearly not enough for a family of 5 but ultra cute. A week or two ago I purchased that cannister from Twin City Missions 2nd chance shop for about $1. The baskets I had and I'm sure at some point I bought it at a garage sale for .10! But by making these simple changes the hot drinks area went from hum drum to yum yum! Hey does anyone have any ideas how to hide those pesky cords?
Then there was the bathroom. I had all of my things on Grandma's mirrored pedastal but it tended to get crowded and look messy. Plus, I really wanted the pedastal on my dresser with perfumes only! So I tried to make it look neater and 'Country Shabby Chic'. The metal was too harsh next to the antique brass faucets. I just didn't like the white basket, even though I was sure it was going to be shabby fabulous!
This is what we went with now all of my lotions and sprays and misc items are neatly tucked away in this very country looking basket. The basket was free it was given to me full of goodies as part of a baby shower gift!

Now on to gussy up the pass through in the diningroom/homeschool room. We have a potted plant. I love ivy and we have 4 in the house so I'm gonna have to get another crocus and try not to kill it this time. Anyway, we got 3 of these free at the end of a banquet and they all came in these standard plastic wicker baskets.
But since I am trying to creat that shabby chic enviornment I looked around and found this pot on my front steps, empty! I may come back and stencil on it or paint the "braided" portion that runs along the top of the pot. Since this picture was taken I've pushed it to the side to hide the financial paperwork poping up over the edge! I think the garden gate feel of the pot fits our home nicely.

These are just a few simple things anyone can do with the things around your house, things picked up at garage sales & goodwill.

I can't have anything nice....

I just bought this beautiful wreath for my front door about 2-3 weeks ago. I just love how it looks so country and blends in with the feeling up here at Rooster Hill. On the way to church on Mother's Day I looked up at my wonderful wreath and noticed it looked a little messy and I assumed the kids had somehow done something to it and then hung it back up hoping Mom wouldn't notice. I immediately remebered a friend of mine saying: "I can't have anything nice with these kids around." But when I got back on Sunday night I noticed it wasn't the poor accused sweet little angel babies. It was a bird! Apparently, the wreath also looks like a lovely place for a nest. So, maybe now I'll have something wonderful a wreath and a bunch of baby birds, Oh and by the way we are studing bird nests in science right now...Look at how the Lord provides!

Being Thankful always!

No more Julie & Brandi Monday......

Tonight is suppose to be Julie & Brandi Monday. But they graduated last week so it's just Monday!

1 Peter 4:9 :Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.

So today I am Mrs Grumpy pants (Is there such a thing as righteous grumpiness) because I miss my Halei(what Pearson calls Julie) & 'Brendi' (Pearson's rendition of Brandi's name). All the fun and laughter and joy they brought to this house every week. Even when we had to get Biblical their hearts are so open to the word! Julie will be back from Graham to work in town for a while but Brandi is off into the world!

Titus 2:4-5: Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands and children, 5to be self-controlled and pure, to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands, so that no one will malign the word of God.
For years I disobeyed the command thinking I didn't have anything to give. That I still needed to grow....that was an excuse. The last 3-4 years have proven have been so fruitful and so blessed by close friendships with Sarah, Halei, Julie & Brandi. But let me tell you I was the one missing out on the friendship and the love that these inter-generational relations provide! Oh and I was sinning yes...sinning because I was not obey God's command and pouring into the lives of others! It's amazing when you obey how generous God is and how he returns the years the locust have eaten.

It's hard trying to explain the kids that Julie and Brandi are not coming on Monday's anymore and that Brandi will not be coming at all (hopefully she'll pop by when she is in town!). And that Julies days are numbered here in College Station. Of course sweet Peyton's main concern is will Brandi remember my name?

Proverbs 18:24A man of many companions may come to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.

We love you gals, Monday will never be the same!

Ready for Summer

These 3 little country girls who are waiting for summer love to read poetry. Around here and our current favorite is Robert Luis Stevenson. I love the simple rhyme scheme it keeps the kids attention. His images have sparked many play adventures at our house! So here is another good one !
Summer Sun
by Robert Louis Stevenson

GREAT is the sun, and wide he goes
Through empty heaven without repose;
And in the blue and glowing days
More thick than rain he showers his rays.

Though closer still the blinds we pull
To keep the shady parlour cool,
Yet he will find a chink or two
To slip his golden fingers through.

The dusty attic, spider-clad,
He, through the keyhole, maketh glad;
And through the broken edge of tiles
Into the laddered hay-loft smiles.

Meantime his golden face around
He bares to all the garden ground,
And sheds a warm and glittering look
Among the ivy's inmost nook.

Above the hills, along the blue,
Round the bright air with footing true,
To please the child, to paint the rose,
The gardener of the World, he goes.
Psalm 74:17
It was you who set all the boundaries of the earth; you made both summer and winter.
Now a quick aside.....
Normally, when I go to Biblegateway it's just to avoid having to type the verse and possibly making a mistake. But today I was wondering what does the Bible say about summer? I knew about the ant verse & some of the seasonal verses but who knew there are 19 verses that discuss summer.
But the way this is my favorite verse from the list: Proverbs 10:5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son.
because I think of my kids as the crop the verse reminds me that we have a limited amount of time to pour scripture & love into their lives so I better not be sleeping on the job! I do not want to be a disgraceful daughter! Plus, before I know it they will be off making their way in the world and I want it to be with the Lord.

Happy Summer!

Adoption

Well, since Heather listed us on her blog as a family that is adopting I feel compelled to let the world know about it! In thinking about our blog I do not think I have ever addressed the subject of adoption though I have definite thoughts and opinions on the matter!
The Bible says in James 1:27 that the "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world." So it is a Biblical mandate to actively care for widows & orphans. Additionally, since its in the Bible we know God is at work here and we can join in just like Jesus did!
Personally, Wayne and I are Pro-Life and we felt that adoption was a way to move from neutral to actively fighting for the lives of the unborn. Some of you know just before we found out we were pregnant with Parker (after trying for 5 years) we had decided to adopt through Jen's Mom's agency in Houston (Which is funny because we did not know Jenn at the time). But with the coming of Parker and then Pearson we've been in a holding pattern. Now, however, the Lord has made it clear that it is time to adopt. It appears however that we will be adopting through a local agency that provides rescue adoptions instead of with Jenn's Mom.
Right now we are still filling out paperwork but we are ready to take classes this summer. So hopefully as soon as our paperwork is done we will be open for an adopting our boy(s)...
